Start here: Arrange time for a walkthrough and a paperwork review. A consumer checklist helps you ask informed questions; technical verification remains the repairer’s work.

Before the pickup appointment

Ask the shop to confirm the vehicle is ready and allow time for a conversation. Request the final balance, accepted payment methods and any steps involving a check or other payee before you arrive. If you have a rental vehicle, confirm its return arrangements separately.

Bring your list of original concerns. Tell the shop in advance if you want a particular finding or operation explained so the right records are available.

Start with the final paperwork

Ask for an itemized record of the completed repairs and a clear explanation of changes from the original estimate. Check that the document identifies your vehicle and the work performed. Ask about parts descriptions, outside services, charges and any work that was deferred or excluded.

Get the applicable warranty in writing and ask who to contact if a concern appears. Understand the coverage, limits and claim process rather than assuming every repair carries the same warranty.

Ask about verification relevant to your repair

Depending on the damage and completed work, useful records may include scans, calibration results, alignment results or measurement reports. Ask which checks were required for your vehicle and how the shop documented them. Have unfamiliar terms explained in everyday language.

A report’s title alone does not explain its scope. Ask what was checked, what the result means, and whether any issue needs follow-up. Our separate scans and calibrations guide explains those electronic procedures in more detail.

Walk around the vehicle with the shop

In suitable lighting, look over the repaired areas together. Ask about paint appearance, panel fit, trim and the condition of the interior. Check the operation of items affected by the repair, such as a repaired door, window, lock or liftgate, with the shop’s assistance.

Raise anything you do not understand while you are there. A visible concern deserves an explanation and, where appropriate, further checking. Looking over the exterior cannot verify hidden structural work or every safety system.

Discuss care and the drive home

Ask for the refinish provider’s or shop’s care instructions, including washing, waxing and any restrictions relevant to the materials used. Follow the written instructions for your repair rather than a general waiting period found online.

Ask whether there are any operating limitations or unresolved warnings. If a safety concern remains, have it assessed before driving. Never test collision-avoidance systems by deliberately creating a hazardous situation.

If something appears later

Record when the issue occurs and what you notice. A photograph or short recording can help if it can be made safely; never use a phone to document a problem while driving. Contact the repairer promptly with a factual description.

For a warning, handling change or other concern that could affect safe operation, stop using the vehicle when safe to do so and arrange assessment. If you want another opinion about the completed repair, ask about the scope and cost of a post-repair inspection.

Your take-home file

  • Final repair invoice and explanation of changes.
  • Applicable warranty and care instructions.
  • Relevant inspection, scan, calibration or measurement records.
  • A written record of agreed follow-up items and a contact person.
