Your choice comes first: An insurer’s preferred-shop list is not your only option. Choose the repairer you trust, then address the claim and repair arrangements in writing.
What does “out of network” mean for a body shop?
It means the repairer is outside that insurer’s direct repair or referral program. It does not, by itself, mean the shop lacks training, equipment or manufacturer credentials. Big Chris Collision deliberately stays outside insurer DRPs. We build the repair plan around the vehicle and explain it directly to its owner.
How steering can turn a suggestion into an insurance funnel
A recommendation becomes a concern when repeated pressure makes you believe you have no meaningful choice. The funnel may start with a claim-reporting call, an app prompt or a request to select a “preferred” location. Before you realize it, an appointment or vehicle transfer may be arranged around the insurer’s list instead of your decision.
Watch for statements such as “you must use our network,” “we cannot guarantee that shop’s work,” or suggestions that choosing independently will automatically cause delays or leave you without options. StopDRP’s consumer tips describe pressure involving network lists, guarantees and scheduling. Ask what the speaker actually means and request the basis in writing. A warning about a genuine unresolved charge needs an explanation; it should not be used to conceal your choice.
Can they tell me I cannot choose outside Select Service or another DRP?
South Carolina’s Department of Insurance says you may have your vehicle repaired at the shop you choose, including a shop different from the adjuster’s recommendation. A program name does not make that selection for you. The insurer’s payment position is a separate question: ask for the proposed amount and any disputed charges in writing rather than treating a payment disagreement as a rule that you must change shops.
What to say before accepting a network appointment
You can say: “I have selected Big Chris Collision in Aiken. Please record my shop choice. Send the estimate and explain any inspection steps or disputed payment items in writing. Do not arrange a vehicle transfer on my behalf without my authorization.”
Save the app messages or emails, note who you spoke with and when, and ask whether a suggested shop is part of the insurer’s DRP. If someone claims a restriction applies, request the precise policy wording or other basis. Continue to meet applicable claim duties and deadlines while you question the restriction.
Why choose Big Chris Collision?
You can speak directly with Chris about the repair. Our independent Aiken shop combines manufacturer certification programs for select brands, I-CAR Gold Class and ASE Blue Seal recognition with a genuine-OEM-parts repair approach. We identify required procedures, document damage and explain the checks needed to complete the work. Ask which manufacturer credentials apply to your vehicle.
Our position is straightforward: the insurer’s estimate is not the manufacturer’s repair manual. If needed work is missing or disputed, we explain the difference and build the supporting vehicle record. You deserve more than being handed a cheaper number and told to find a shop that will accept it.
What if the insurer refuses to pay for required repairs?
Bring us the estimate before deciding to accept an incomplete repair. We can compare its scope with the damage analysis and applicable manufacturer information, then document a supplement or explain the unresolved items. Ask about independent appraisal when the policy provides an applicable process, consumer complaint resources, or independent legal counsel for a coverage or liability dispute.
A proper repair and a payment dispute need attention together. We discuss charges and authorization before work; we cannot guarantee a carrier’s payment or a legal outcome. Our role is to make the vehicle evidence clear and help you understand the next step, so a disputed estimate does not quietly become the repair standard.
Choose your repairer before the referral becomes the plan
If you are being pushed toward a network shop, talk with Big Chris Collision. Share your vehicle details, the estimate and the wording that concerns you. We will help you start with a documented repair conversation.
